Why it’s important

Calcium and other substances from the saliva in your mouth continually bathe your teeth, helping to keep them strong. Whilst this is a good thing, over time it can lead to a build-up of plaque and hard deposits called tartar.

Tartar cannot be removed by brushing or flossing and if allowed to accumulate provides the ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive on the teeth and gums. If it’s not regularly removed by a dentist it can lead to gum disease and even tooth loss.

That’s why we recommend a six monthly check up & clean. Not only will your teeth and gums feel polished and fresh, it also gives our dentists the chance to spot any other problems, like tooth decay, so they can be addressed early with the least amount of fuss and cost.

Your check up & clean includes:

What happens during
your check up & clean?

1. Firstly, we get to know you

To ensure we provide the best possible service it is important that our dentists get to know you a little. They will want to discuss lifestyle factors and habits that may impact on your oral hygiene and also any concerns that you have identified.

This forms an important part of our service as the more we know, the more we are able to help you improve your oral health.

2. Next is the dentist's examination

Once they have a good understanding of your dental hygiene habits and are across any potential problems, your dentist will proceed with a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums and jaw bone.

A Smile Dental Clinics new patient exam typically consists of:

  • A visual check
  • Charting of all your teeth
  • A gentle exploration of your teeth and gums for signs of decay or disease
  • Photos from inside your mouth using a small hand held camera
  • X-rays to determine what’s going on below the surface

3. Now it’s time to clean, polish and fluoride your teeth

Your dentists will start by gently removing tartar deposits from your teeth, reaching into all those tricky places that normal brushing and flossing can't. Your teeth are then flossed and polished.

A fluoride treatment will be applied directly to the surfaces of each tooth to help protect them from the acids and bacteria in your mouth that cause decay. You shouldn’t eat or drink for at least 30 minutes afterwards to allow your teeth time to absorb the fluoride and repair any tiny areas of decay.

What happens after
your check up & clean?

Once the examination has been completed, your dentist will provide you with a full update on your oral health. They will take you through any problems they might have found and answer all of your questions. This is time well spent and you should take advantage of your dentists experience and knowledge to learn more about your teeth.
