A very common problem

Three out of four adults over the age of 35 have some form of gingivitis or gum disease, making it an extremely common dental issue.

The primary cause of gingivitis is dental plaque, which can accumulate on the surfaces of the teeth and harden into tartar. Tartar provides the ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive which can result in swelling, inflammation or infection of the gums.

Periodontitis is a more advanced and aggressive form of gingivitis that can destroy the bone that holds teeth in place. If left untreated, periodontitis will ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Research has linked gum disease to other health related issues such as heart disease, strokes, lung disease and diabetes, so it’s important to maintain good oral health including a regular check up & clean.

The good news is that if caught early, gum disease can be effectively treated and managed by our dentists and hygienists.

Symptoms of gum disease

Treatment Options

Regular hygiene cleans

Brushing and flossing cannot remove tartar build up, so a regular scale and clean from a hygienist or dentist is one of the best ways to treat and prevent gum disease

Root planing

Root planes are used after a hygiene clean to smooth the surfaces of the roots making it more difficult for the bacteria that cause gum disease to gain a foot hold. The end result is a reduction in bleeding and swelling.

Antibiotics

Used in conjunction with physical cleaning and planing, antibiotics are effective in treating more advanced stages of periodontal disease.

Surgical treatment

Surgical treatment may be necessary for advanced periodontal disease to provide direct access to the roots for a complete clean below the gum line.
