The History of Braces

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

The desire to have a straight and even smile has existed throughout human history for centuries and the history of braces can be traced back as far back as Ancient Egypt! Although our love (and sometimes hate) relationship with the techniques and systems used to achieve smile perfection has certainly remained the same over the years, modern orthodontic methods used today have certainly evolved from humble beginnings.

Let’s take a look at the weird and wonderful evolution of modern braces.

1600 BC– This is when the desire for a perfect smile began, with the Egyptians. Mummies from this time have been discovered with bands around their teeth, apparently made made out of cat and other animal intestines.

1728– Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist widely acknowledged as the “Father of Modern Dentistry” created the first modern braces out of a horseshoe, which he called a ‘Blandeau’. It worked by expanding the dental arch to create straighter teeth.

1819 – The year when Delabarre introduced the ‘wire crib’, which is the event that marked the birth of contemporary, metal braces. Gum elastics were invented in 1843 and the first cut rubber bands from rubber tubing were introduced in 1850.

1900’s – Edward Angle developed the most notable work in history thus far and devised a classification system for dentists to describe the level of straightening required, which way the teeth are pointing and how they fit together to produce a straight smile. This method is still used to diagnose and straighten teeth today. Edward Angle also founded the very first orthodontic journal in 1907, and the first school and college of orthodontics.

1997 – Invisalign was invented by Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth in San Jose, California using 3D computer technology. Today, more than 2.5 million patients in over 45 countries have used Invisalign.
